Pete Cromer’s much-loved collages, paintings and sculptures include popping colour and texture. His work often gives personality to and reflects a characterisation of our unique Aussie fauna – which is why students gravitate to his work. In this activity, modelled plates and bowls are transformed into a character by simply extending their shapes.

Step 1. Divide a block of Oz Clay into 30 pieces.

Step 2. Roll a piece of clay into a ball.

NB: It’s recommended you work on a Silicone Mat, wood board or a piece of calico/fabric.

Step 3. Flatten the ball to make a 1cm-thick circle (approximately 9-12cm diameter). Build up clay along the rim of the circle to create a shallow bowl or plate. Extend the bowl shape by adding elements for ears, tail, wings, etc.

TIP: Avoid pinching the clay too thin as it may crack. Allow the bowl to dry. (Drying time depends on a room’s temperature and the thickness of the clay).

Step 4. Paint your character onto the dish using Poster Colours Paint.

Step 5. Glaze the dish with a coat of Mod Podge. Leave to dry.

OPTION. You can replace Poster Colours with any other watercolour pan disc that you may have on hand.
