Children at East West Childcare and Kindergarten are encouraged to explore a variety of different surfaces, and sensory environments, when expressing their creativity.

The underside of this table is an example of their artistic expression facilitated through ‘dark painting’.

Dark painting is an activity where the educators turn off the ceiling lights and provide only a few small portable lights throughout the room. Children independently paint, draw and make in this gentle, low-light environment. During one dark painting session, kindergarten children crawled under the table and took great delight in exploring it as their canvas. Here it is!
