Part of the Year Three SOSE curriculum involves the students visiting the Royal Melbourne Zoo and participating
in the Zoo Snooze.

Before commencing their Mondrian inspired work the students drew various animals in their visual diaries, using visual
resources. They were asked to focus on the animal’s shape.

The students looked at some of Mondrian’s work and discussed the colours, lines and spaces he used and how
they thought he may have constructed his paintings.

The students were encouraged to sketch out the basic shape of their animal. They practiced using a ruler and marker
to draw straight horizontal and vertical lines. Rendering techniques were demonstrated and practiced as well.

When they felt confident they were able to use their skills to divide up their animal and render the spaces with primary
colours.

When complete the animal shape was cut out, leaving a border of white paper before attaching to black cover paper.
