Tang Dynasty Masks

BACKGROUND:
Using photographs of the Tang Dynasty Show’s masks and headdresses and a small modern version of the
wooden masks used for village performances (shown bottom right).
Students are to create their own
interpretation of the masks of China.
MATERIALS:
Plastic masks, newspaper, PVA glue, cardboard, paint, paper Magiclay, flowers, mirrors, decorative papers,
pipe cleaners, feathers, sequins and any other interesting materials.
METHOD:
Step 1 Based on the photographs and mask, design a mask in your visual diary.
Step 2 Cover the inside of a plastic face mould with three layers of strips
of newspaper and PVA.
Step 3 Using cardboard from used boxes make other shapes onto the paper mache face.
Add other layers of
paper mache to the cardboard to reinforce the structure.
Step 4 Paint the finished mask with white paint.
Step 5 Start to paint and decorate the mask. If unsure redraw in your visual diary.
Be organized in
your approach. Paper Magiclay may be applied before painting the final colours onto your mask.
Step 6 Complete your mask with the variety of materials in the classroom.
Step 7 Evaluation and Revisit the Original Design
What changes did you make? Why did you make these
changes? Do you like your mask? Why? If not, why not?
Step 8 Make a sketch of your finished mask
Place annotations on your designs explaining what you used
on your mask
