Iris Folding

Materials

Iris folding is the process of layering strips of paper in a spiral formation around a cut-out shape.

NB: The size of the paper strip will determine how many layers are required to complete the iris. To make this activity easier and with fewer steps, we recommend using thick strips, approximately 6 x 21cm.

Step 1. Cut a strip of paper and fold in half.

Step 2. Position the first strip (fold line inwards) over the centre hole of the Kraft Weaving Hanger Shape. Cut strip to size, then hold in place with masking tape.

Step 3. Repeat the above steps, working in a spiral formation. Add a second strip then tape.

Step 4. Continue to work around the shape, working inwards to complete each round.

Step 5. Once the desired aperture ‘opening’ is achieved, cover the space with a piece of paper, then tape to secure.

Turn over to reveal the beautiful Iris overleaf. This stunning hanging ornament is perfect for a front door, class display or as a tree hanger.

Optional: Collage or decorate the front of the Weaving Hanger to cover the working side.
