Gumnut Bauble

Materials

Adorn your Christmas tree with these simple yet effective gumnut baubles that celebrate the beauty of an Australian icon.

Step 1. Cut a 25cm length of Copper Wire. Fold it in half and twist it around itself. Poke a guide hole into a Half Poly Ball with a satay stick. Insert the wire until it almost pokes out the bottom.

Step 2. Cover the poly shape with a ball of Magiclay the size of a 20-cent coin. Mould it into a gumnut. Cover at least 2cm of the wire to hold it securely in place. Allow to dry.

Step 3. Paint the gumnut a cool colour with Shimmer Glass Paint. Allow to dry.

Step 4. Cut 1m lengths from two colours of Warm Wool. Cut each length into approximately 13cm pieces.

Step 5. Create mixed bunches of seven pieces of the two colours of wool. Fold each bunch in half.

Step 6. Use a pencil to push each bunch of wool into the polystyrene on the bottom of the gumnut. Position the bunches in a circle approximately 5mm in from the edge of the gumnut.

Step 7. Add some tiny balls of Magiclay to the ends of the wool pieces. Dots can be left white or coloured with a marker.

Step 8. Curl the Copper Wire to create a hanger.

OPTION. Shimmer Glass Paint can be substituted with Pearlescent Watercolours.

TIP. Use the pack of assorted sized Poly Half Balls to make a range of different sized gumnuts. Students with smaller sized poly shapes may choose to create multiple gumnuts.
