DESIGN BRIEF

This unit of work will develop your artistic eye for sculpture and allow you to experiment with the
elements of form and balance. In this activity, the starting point will be a design process which shows
how you will combine the animal and the human elements into a new balanced sculptural form.  Your
task is to research and design a posed figure which depicts some animal and some human features. You
will complete a design process which shows the development of your ideas for this sculpture. Remember
you sculpture may be kneeling, sitting, lying or standing You will create a final shaded, sketch and
annotate how you will construct the sculpture.  Next, you must construct a sculptural base from
the variety of cardboard cones, cylinders, wire mesh, styrene balls and masking tape provided. You will
apply layers of paper mache over this base until your sculpture is solid and balanced. Finally you will
select or mix one colour from acrylic paints, mix sand and PVA with the paint and apply a textural
coating to your sculpture. Finally use the embossing foil to create one or two areas of detail on your
sculpture – this may take the form of facial features, armour, or adornments.
