Cartoon Masks

Term: 3 Year: 2010
Cartoon Masks 2
Cartoon Masks 1
Cartoon Masks 4
Cartoon Masks 3

This unit of work was completed during term one while the Year 7 students were new to Secondary school.
Very few of them had completed any real pottery work during Primary school, so they were interested in
pursuing these classes.

How To:

•We began with some basic lessons on cartooning and exploring how a cartoonist uses different types of
lines to create certain facial expressions.

•The students were free to explore different styles of cartooning, with some enjoying the Japanese
style of drawing which is popular at the moment.

•Once each student had come up with a face that they were happy with, we went to the pottery room to
complete them in 3D.

•Classes began with hand building skills such as pinch pots and slab. This formed the basis for the
head.

•Modelling techniques, such as coils, were demonstrated so the students could employ these ideas for
their own specific needs.

•The completed pottery was bisque fired, and glazed.
