Artist Study – Del Kathryn Barton & Jane Donaldson

We began our unit with a Visual Thinking lesson, looking at the artists Del Kathryn Barton and illustrator Jane Donaldson.

We focused in particular on their use of colour, subject matter and painting techniques. Students spent a couple of lessons exploring different watercolour techniques before sketching a portrait of themselves or someone they knew. They then painted it in the style of their favourite artist.

The children had 7 x 50 min lessons to work on their portraits. Some children chose to add shimmery paper highlights to enhance certain areas.
