During 2020 parents were challenged more than ever to participate in their childrens’ education, particularly in those states with extended lockdowns.

With this first-hand experience, many teachers observed parents becoming more aware of the hard work they do. Building an engaged learning environment and offering children creative inspiration does not come easily.

And nothing builds engagement and inspiration like a story, whether it’s visual or word-based.

It is fair to hope we are at the start of a children’s literature golden age here in Australia. There’s never been a more important time for storytelling. Our young Australians need touchstones of comfort and inspiration laid down before them like stepping stones as guides through these tumultuous times.

From a record number of entries, The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) announced its Notables List, comprised of 95 books published in 2020. It guides parents and educators looking for outstanding quality stories by Australian creators.

The Notables became a shortlist on March 30 and will culminate in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards on August 20. And we all know what follows that – CBCA Book Week!
This year’s theme for CBCA Book Week is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds, reminding us that all good stories transport us into the past, the present, and to places which stretch the imagination.

Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds has inspired a beautiful suite of images by international award-winning storyteller Shaun Tan which are captured in the CBCA’s official merchandise range.
I’m really excited to share this stunning artwork with you today. We at the CBCA wish you the very best for 2021 and look forward to working with you.

The official range of CBCA Book Week merchandise is available from the eStore:
www.cbca.org.au/store or from your local CBCA branch.
