TOPshots!

Term: 4 Year: 2018

Celebrating emerging artists at Monash Gallery of Art.

Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) is the Australian home of photography. As the only public collection solely dedicated to Australian photographs, MGA holds a unique place in Australia’s cultural landscape. We provide culturally enriching experiences that inspire audiences to embrace, explore, and value photography.

Through an interactive, participatory dialogue that connects and engages with students, our education program provides tours for primary, secondary and tertiary students and teachers. We use our exhibitions to encourage students to look deeply at the works, to question photography’s role in the future and to focus on building their visual literacy and critical thinking skills. A perennial favourite amongst visiting schools is our long-running program ‘Behind the scenes’, which supports VCE Studio Arts Unit 4 and includes a visit to the collection storage room.

MGA’s education talks are free and can be tailored to the individual needs of your students.

In addition to our tour programs, over the past ten years MGA has celebrated the work of emerging photomedia artists with the annual TOPshots award and exhibition. TOPshots showcases the best photomedia work produced by students studying the VCE subjects Art, Media, and Studio Arts, and IB Visual Arts. Each subject has a different focus within the broader course of arts education which makes the TOPshots exhibition an exciting overview of different creative trajectories.

The 2017-18 iteration of the prize saw an outstanding quality of work, unique ideas and approaches from all of the shortlisted students. Artworks showcased here are by our 2017-18 winner Cam Myers (Woodleigh School), and Honourable mentions Natalie Bocquet (Princes Hill Secondary College), Letran Truong (Wellington Secondary College) and Ben Macri (Marcellin College).

Entries for TOPshots 2018-19 will open at the beginning of Term Four 2018.
