Year 1 through to Year 6 studied reptiles as their first unit of work. It was based on a book – Reptiles and
Amphibians by Simon Mugford. This was complemented by a BBC documentary on reptiles that was watched by all levels.

Year 1 and 2 are visiting the Melbourne Zoo to have a lesson on reptiles and visit the reptile enclosure. Photocopies
of reptiles were provided for students to select from.

Discussion centred on shape, particular features, pattern and colour. It also covered peculiarities and characteristics
e.g. chameleon is the slowest lizard but has the fastest and longest tongue etc.

Emphasis was put on recording the details of what they see and not stereotyping.
