This was the second in a series of different printing processes introduced to the children this semester.

The children were limited to three colours – although I’m sure you could find more in some of
the work with careful inspection – and were given the options of using the leaves and fern fronds
as templates or stencils or a combination of both.

The children were given ample opportunity to try out their ideas on newspaper and saw very quickly that one
of the essentials of successful printing is a clean and well organized work area.

We discussed colour and the different effects we would get depending on whether we used darker colours
first and built up to light colour, or vice versa.

I wanted the children to see the effects of layering in their work.

I also wanted them to see that something which they thought was ‘wrong’ could be overprinted
several more times to great effect.

By using this work as covers for small notebooks or diaries, we could add another art area to this activity
and introduce the children to simple bookmaking techniques.
