•The students started by writing their name in ‘bubble writing’ on a large sheet of paper.
•Ink was held in a straw by sealing the top of the straw with their thumb and released little by
little as the students traced around the outline of their name.
•While the ink was still wet
the students used the straw to blow the ink (generally in the direction away from the letter and
towards the edges of the page).
•When the ink dried the students used fine liner pens to
outline the blown ink, on both inside and outside.
•At this point a lesson was taught on
‘positive’ and ‘negative’ space and images using positive and negative space
effectively were shown (see examples below). It was discussed how they would use this knowledge to
finish their artwork, and how particular attention would need to be paid to letters such as
“a”, “b”, “d” etcetera.

The final step was to paint the ‘positive’ parts of their artwork in black ink and leave the
‘negative’ parts white.
