Monochromatic Collage Portrait

Term: 3 Year: 2013

The Central Idea of this unit was “We have a responsibility to look after ourselves and our environment.”

We looked at how other artists have used non-conventional materials to create portrait artworks and how we could create art works from recycled materials.

Following a discussion on facial proportions students completed observational line drawings of their faces using mirrors and correct facial proportions. I then enlarged these images onto A3 cartridge paper.  Students took a series of portrait photos of each other against a strong light to show a strong tonal contrast.

They chose one colour to express their portrait and sourced a range of tones from light to dark from magazines. Students then completed a monochromatic torn paper collage to express their tonal portrait photographs.
