Ken Done Inspired Collages

After attending Zart’s Ken Done workshop, I was inspired by Tania to try some collage fun with grade 3 and 4. I used Ken Done’s piece, Chinaman’s Beach from the Terrace” as our starting point for discussion and looked at his bright colours, how he created the yachts and detail looking out of his window.

We followed Tania’s procedure of using a black square and ruling a border as a frame. The children used coloured adhesive papers and stickers to frame each corner with flowers and give an impression of looking out of a window or from a balcony. They then added yachts and white fine liner pens to add sparkle and detail in their compositions. The children were immersed in the process, they loved the effect of the bright colours on black and the ease in producing a piece of art they were proud of!
