In conjunction with the Year 5/6 unit on Forces of Nature, I decided to explore the skills, techniques and
processes associated with the construction and design of a Volcano.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

Modroc, newspaper, masking tape, cardboard for a base, paint, plasticine, pipe cleaners, cellophane, feathers etc.
for decoration.

PROCEDURE:

WEEK 1:

Students construct Volcano using scrunched up newspaper attached to base using masking tape. Design brief that
construction be no higher than 25cm.

WEEK 2:

Demonstrate the method to apply modroc. Students cut 100 large bandaid size modroc strips.

WEEK 3:

Students apply modroc to their volcano construction.

WEEK 4:

Discuss decoration options regarding paint selection, referring to the colour wheel. Students paint construction.

WEEK 5:

Students add details to their construction eg. Huts, boats, vegetation, animals and people make from plasticine
and or card board.

Students were thrilled with their results and worked very well in pairs on their constructions.
