Felted Banners
Term: 1 Year: 2010
I was keen to try felting with a few grades after spending a day with felt artist Elizabeth Armstrong.
Students in grade 3 and 4 had the opportunity to try wet felting. Firstly we talked about the history of
felting and looking at some felted items. Next we started what was at times a messy process –
rubbing and then rolling the felt squares and even singing as we did this.
Each student created a felt square and then they decided to cut them into a shape or leave them as a
square. These were then made into a large banner. When the other students in the school came through
the art room over the next 2-3 weeks they helped with a little of the rolling and rubbing to make the
large banners.
All the kids were very interested in the process and now have a great appreciation of how much work went
into making each banner.
The banners will soon hang in the school foyer.
