Fauvist Cool and Warm Landscape

In this lesson students explore fauvism and artworks by artists such as Henri Matisse and Andre Derain. Students create a landscape exploring the fauvist aesthetic and use colour slicks to create bold lines and colours. Students create both a warm and cool landscape to explore different colourways.

Lesson 1

Students explore the style of Fauvism and analyse the works of Henri Matisse and Andre Derain. Explore their landscape paintings and discuss the style, the use of colours and how expressive the brush strokes are.

Students choose a landscape scene and work from a photo to recreate their scene as a fauvist work using colour slicks. Students create 2 landscapes with warm and cool colours. As a class discuss what colours would be classed as warm or cool.

Students can complete 2 different landscapes in 2 separate colour ways or create the same landscape using warm and cool colours.

Lesson 2

Students complete their 2 landscape drawings and discuss how they will present their artworks as a class.
