Level 3 students explored the topic of insects. They viewed pictures from resource books and posters and
sketched a variety of shapes and features of different insects.

Using their drawings to guide them, students were then asked to create a collage of their chosen insect.

Students were challenged to develop a balanced and unified picture using only a few colours. Students
developed texture through their use of different materials such as corrugated cardboard, hessian, black
and gold paper and tracing paper. We discussed and looked at the effects of layering shapes in a
collage to highlight specific features.

Through the students’ use of different surfaces, sizes and shapes and only a few select colour they
created a collage that was interesting and effective.
