City of Bethlehem: Celebrating the Nativity

Materials

Created collaboratively or individually, this contemporary nativity scene incorporates collage and construction skills your students will be able to use again and again.

Step 1. Cut out a building shape from a sheet of Coloured Cardboard or Natural Corrugated Card.

Step 2. Add a mixture of colours to the shape by applying and blending Oil Pastels. TIP. Gently apply colour to the raised textures of the corrugated card instead of pushing the colour into the grooves.

Step 3. Share scraps of cardboard and corrugated card to cut out features for the building, e.g. windows, doors, roofs and towers.

OPTION. Add colour to these shapes using the Oil Pastels.

Step 4. Use Supertac to glue the features to the building.

Step 5. To make your building stand up, cut slots into two small rectangles of cardboard. Cut two slots into the bottom edge of the building, then insert the cardboard pieces.

Step 6. Create collages of the Three Wise Men, camels, donkeys, sheep, etc. from left-over cardboard and card. Add colour with the Oil Pastels. Make the characters stand up by cutting slots and inserting supports.

OPTION. You can incorporate any other cardboard offcuts that you may have into the design and construction.
