Bird Sculptures

Term: 2 Year: 2012

A variety of bird posters and photographs were displayed in the Art Room, which the students used to observe the different physical characteristics of birds.

The students were asked to select a bird they wanted to create into a sculpture. Using scrunched up newspaper and masking tape the students began creating the form of a bird.  Cardboard wings and beaks were added next.  Two layers of paper mache were pasted on, and wire legs inserted through the bottom of the form.

Students were asked to consider the colour, pattern and tones of their bird’s feathers. They experimented with paint trying to recreate similar colours before painting their sculptures. The end result was a pleasing assortment of bird sculptures that were all unique and well thought out.
