Australian Native Wreath Decoration

Materials

Explore a range of paper skills as you create a wreath that puts an Aussie spin on a traditional Christmas decoration.

Step 1. Cut out a circle from a sheet of Coloured Cardboard (approx. 16 – 20cm). Older students may choose to cut out the centre to make a ring.

Step 2. Cut 48 symmetrical leaves from a sheet of light or dark green Coloured Cardboard. Remember to fold the sheet before cutting to make symmetrical shapes. The leaves should be narrow and approximately 7 – 10cm long with a stem.

Step 3. Swap 12 of the leaves with a classmate who has different colour green leaves.

Step 4. Unfold the leaves and turn over so that the inside becomes the back of the leaf and the fold creates a ridge down the centre on the front of the leaf. Trim the stem to this ridge for a thin end to the leaf.

Step 5. Create flowers for the wreath by finely fringing a strip of cardboard and then tightly rolling it up. Secure the roll with a small strip of green cardboard wrapped around the non-fringed side. A small dot of Supertac will hold the cardboard in place. Other flowers can be created using a range of paper skills.

Step 6. Arrange leaves and flowers and glue them to the base with Supertac.

TIP. Keep a slight bend in the leaves to give the wreath form and allow the leaves to create layers over the flowers.

OPTIONS. A Cardboard Circle Base 19cm can be used for the base. Leave it brown or colour with a Colour Slick Paint Stick.
