How To:

•This was our first term activity.
We discussed school holiday activities. All children had
visited the beach at some stage (Geelong Waterfront and/or the local beaches such as Torquay).

•We looked at art by Ken Done “Beach”1986/87; oil on canvas.

•We read the story and discussed illustrations “At the Beach- Postcards from Crabby Point”
by Roland Harvey.

•We made a list on the whiteboard of beach activities 1.on the sand, 2.on/in the water, and 3.in the
air.

•Students divided an A3 page into 3 sections with a straight line for the horizon and a wavy line for
the water’s edge.

•They then drew at least one beach activity in each section using oil pastels. Three different food
dye washes were then painted, one for each section.
Students pasted real sand onto the sand area.

•They framed their work by adding either purple paper stripping or gluing the trimmed sheet onto A3
black paper.

•Shells were added using Supertac as a final feature.

•This unit took about 3 weeks.
