Clay Lanterns

Students explored the concept of light and light sources

Through research and discussion, students discovered that the use of lanterns has been through many cultures and centuries. Students were given a brief to create a contemporary clay lantern that reflects a theme of interest to them. Constraints: Had to be cylindrical, have a hole to allow illumination, 3D elements to add character and a lid with a handle. Considerations: What designs would work best as a cylinder, personal likes/dislikes and decoration techniques. Each student created a drawn design before creating one from clay, all as original as each student.
