Soft Pastel Sunflowers

Soft Pastel Sunflowers

Year 2 Students from Brentwood Park Primary School, Berwick used Sunflowers, a series by Vincent Van Gogh as inspiration, along with the sunflowers planted in our school’s vegetable garden, situated right outside our art room windows to complete their own Soft Pastel Sunflowers drawings.

Students translated what they saw into their drawing before using the soft pastels to bring their artwork to life. Authentic colours were used for the sunflowers and students were encouraged to express their individual creativity in the patterns and colours of the vase.

Some of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous works are his Sunflower series. He painted a total of twelve of these canvases, although the most commonly referred to are the seven he painted while in Arles in 1888 – 1889. The other five he had painted previously while in Paris in 1887.

This is an example of still life drawing which can be described as an arrangement of objects, typically including fruit and flowers and objects contrasting with these in texture, such as bowls and glassware.

The Zart Student Gallery is committed to the exhibition of works by a cross-section of students, varying age, year level and diversity of needs.

We believe success looks different for every child.
