Ampersand Scratchbord (5 x 7”) 12.7 x 17.8cm consists of a clay coated hardboard panel that is coated with black India ink that can be scratch back to reveal a white background. Traditionally, professional scratch board is made of thin card. The Ampersand Scratchbord (5 x 7”) 12.7 x 17.8cm improves on this with a stiffer more durable working base. furthermore, the clay surface offers the ability to create unrivalled detail and fine mark making.

For added dimension, coloured inks can be added to the white areas and then scratched again for additional highlights and volume. Artwork can be sprayed with spray fixative allowing the finished scratchboard to be framed without glass!

The Ampersand Scratchbord is 12.7 x 17.8cm (5 x 7”) in size and 3mm thick, has a smooth absorbent kaolin clay ground, evenly coated with black India ink and backed with Ampersand’s true artist hardboard.

Great for primary age and up, scratch board and scratch papers provide the ideal way for students to explore and develop the elements of line, pattern and shape. It also teaches students the importance of positive and negative space which helps with visual cognition and perception.

Tips for getting started:

1. Draw your design directly on the surface with white pastel or graphite.
2. To begin, scratch out all the lines from your drawing on the Scratchbord.
3. Next, scratch in directional lines to show volume.
4. Follow the directional lines, repeating to fill in and begin to sculpt out your shapes.
5. Go over areas several times that need to be the most highlighted.
6. When the drawing is completed, clean off any scratched clay-ink debris with a very soft cloth.
