Whom we provide for

Zart Education was established by Zart Art in 1988 when a need arose to provide professional development for art educators. While Zart Education is partly self-funding it is largely funded by Zart Art. This is our way of supporting art education in primary and secondary schools.

Our clients are also universities, local councils, librarians, hospital educators, kindergarten teachers, after school program leaders, and leaders of holiday programs.

Practical hands-on professional development workshops are offered to teachers of kindergarten, primary and secondary levels. We believe teachers, like their students, learn by doing and so workshops are developed around pertinent teaching methodologies such as The Thinking Curriculum and CSF11. Our workshops fall in two categories:

Zart organised Workshops

Client requested workshops

An Introduction to art teaching

Zart Organised Workshops (ZOW) are conducted at our base in Box Hill North and at designated centres around Victoria. We also conduct a number of workshops interstate. Workshops are scheduled after school hours, Saturday mornings and full days during school time and school holidays. The content of each workshop varies so that during the course of a calendar year we cover different components of the art curriculum. Secondary workshops tend to focus on more specialised areas, such as, Thinking Curriculum, folio presentation and other specialised art subjects. More information or to see our latest workshops...

Client Requested Workshops (CRW) are requested by regional leaders, principals, curriculum co-ordinators and heads of KLAs and cluster groups. These workshops are tailor-made to suit the needs the participants. The duration varies from a full day to after school hours. Most of the assistance we provide is in the area of program development. Through professional development we help schools revitalise and inject more enthusiasm into their art programs. We believe that at primary level teaching visual art is the responsibility of all teachers and that you do not have to be artistic to teach art, but you do need to know how children develop in art and how to use specific skills to harness and nurture childrens creativity. At the beginning of each year Zart Education holds a three day course called Back to Basics for teachers who are going to be new in the art room. This program is based on the current curriculum framework and introduces participants to the relevant theories of child art. Each session is practical and designed to cover a specific area of art. The aim is to prepare participants so they are confidant and able to teach art competently at the beginning of the school year. More information or to see our latest workshops...

Our Consultants

Artists' Register

Our art consultants who facilitate the workshops and our publications are personally committed to creative art programs, have had vast experience in working with children and have shown outstanding results in developing teacher skills in visual arts. Some of them are more au fait with the primary level while others have a secondary focus.

Zart Education has established a register of artists and art consultants who wish to work directly with children in schools. These individuals are ideal for artist-in-residence programs and have vast talent and expertise in their area of artistry. Once we establish a link between the artist and the school, the school negotiates directly with the artist.

Each Artist has an area of expertise. Click a catergory of interest below for more information on the artists:

At Zart Art we have a students' art gallery which features the art works of primary and secondary students from around Victoria. The gallery was set up to provide students with an opportunity to have their art works valued and displayed in a 'real' art gallery. We believe students should learn to appreciate the art works of their contemporaries and place their own art works within a wider context. Each term the displays are changed so that as many individuals as possible have the opportunity to have their work viewed by others. Students, their parents and teachers are welcome to visit the gallery. Gallery hours are Mon-Wed, Fri between 8.30am-5.00pm, Thurs 8.30am-7pm and Sat 8.30am-2.00pm Whats on this term & more info...

We also offer to primary schools an excursion program. This program is designed to give students the opportunity to come and visit our gallery and spend some time viewing and creating art. The two hour visit includes a walk through the gallery looking and talking about the art on display in small groups, followed by a fun art lesson to help students understand the process of art making. Publications

Newsletter

Each year Zart Art also produces a number of resources for teachers. These publications include booklets on particular themes or topics to assist teachers in their planning and teaching. This includes the celebration of Book Week, Christmas and the Olympic Games. Our range of art packs (posters in theme packs with teacher notes on how to use them) have proven to be a huge success.

The Zart Extra is a publication which is sent out to all schools in the first week of each term. It is usually addressed to the art teacher or arts co-ordinator. This newsletter allows art teachers/co-ordinators to learn about what is happening in art education and what other art teachers are doing. There is also information on new art techniques and processes and the latest materials and resources on the market. The insert of the newsletter provides details of our term's workshops, so teachers can then contact us and book into the workshops. more info...
