Exploring Art Issues: Engagement & Learning Through Discussion & Debate

VCE Art / Studio Art
How can we as educators get our students to engage with ideas? By starting with a media report, a quote or an image that evokes questions, opinions and discussion.
This workshop will provide teachers with ideas and resources to introduce topics that use art issues as a starting point for student debate and discovery. These questions can be timeless (What is art?), contemporary (Should art be censored?) or linked to a particular time/culture?
During the workshop teachers will develop skills in:
• locating materials for an art issues based topic
• producing worksheets and guides for students
• introducing a variety of ways to incorporate visual arts into the classroom using debate, community of inquiry & collecting and writing opinions and commentaries.
All materials can be used or modified to suit VELS Levels 4 – 6. This workshop will also assist VCE teachers and their students in undertaking Art: Unit 4, Outcome 2 and Studio Arts: Unit 3.
