“A Dialogue with Art”
The Community of Inquiry Model, VELS Art Level 4–6

How can the Community of Inquiry model be used to engage students in the investigation of the meaning and messages in art? How can this model be used in the school context to support a “thinking curriculum”?

This workshop will provide teachers with hands-on experience of the Community of Inquiry which is a powerful pedagogy that incorporates inquiry learning and philosophy. A Community of Inquiry: - a group of individuals (students and teachers) who use dialogue and questioning to search out a puzzling concept. The key idea in this model, is that thinking should be creative, inclusive, critical and reflective. It attempts to address contemporary challenges of education; to produce better thinkers and more caring members of society, who accept differences and meet the challenges of new and difficult concepts.
All materials and methods will be directly linked to the VELS Standards in the Thinking Processes and The Arts Domains. Although artworks will be used in this workshop as the starting point for the dialogue, the Community of Inquiry can be used across the curriculum in both secondary and primary schools.

At the workshop teachers will:
• be given an introduction to the Community of Inquiry model and links to VELS
• participate in activities that can be used with students in the art classroom and in other curriculum areas
• receive resource materials that can be adapted to their school context
• look at methods to assess student outcomes
