Description

In this workshop I will outline briefly the process I use when illustrating or writing. We will break this down into separate, bite-sized components so that the work made in the workshop will involve the entire thinking, decision-making and creation process. (Warning: some giggling and laughter involved!)

Forming any work of art depends on deciding what you wish to communicate. This is known as the concept phase.
Following on from this we will brainstorm and freely associate around the chosen theme and to record spontaneous thoughts and associations.

This can be noted in a written form, spoken out and written down (we will do this in the session), or rapidly sketched, using stick figures or simplified drawings. Imagine the type of drawing used when playing Pictionary. Small planning drawings are called thumbnails. (Make sure yours are clean for the workshop!)

Alternative views will be assembled and compared; from these we will choose the one that we feel best represents our original concept and communicates it clearly. This will form the basis or plan of our final piece.

As this is a collage workshop, the final piece will be formed from components; painted fragments, torn paper, and pieces of printed matter. We will experiment with these materials to judge which media best expresses our design. Final work is often triggered by a phrase, or key sentence i.e. an ocean of tears, brave as a lion, this job is a drag. Phrases like these can really help to form the final image.

I will encourage you to make final piece larger so that we can edit, or cut off the bits that we don’t need, and finish by placing the end result behind a piece of mountboard, which gives us nice clean edges and helps us focus on the essential message.

This workshop caters to all skill levels as it involves assembly, and participants are like directors pushing their actors around like cattle*. Book into this workshop if you are ready to loose a few inhibitions about expressing yourself on the page, feel like making something and having a load of fun. A variety of my work in 2 and 3D will be used during the workshop!
