Celebrations 2011
To “celebrate” means to honour. Different cultures honour important occasions with a combination of: rituals and customs; special food and beverages; and unique costumes, music and dance. Over time these celebrations have become traditions unique to that culture. Christmas is an important religious and secular celebration in Australia and a wonderful opportunity for migrant students to learn about Australian traditions. Traditions change over time and it is also an opportunity to look at our traditions in relation to the concept of change and continuity. Our classrooms, however, are changing and we must also be mindful of our non-Christian students and their religious and cultural affiliations. To ignore this cultural mix it is to deny the expression of the individual’s personal and cultural identity. Recognition of the individual’s uniqueness is a means of communication and creating a feeling of belonging and togetherness among the students we teach. It is to this end that we bring you the “Celebration 2011” programme.
