Description	The United Nations has declared 2011 the International Year of Forests. The idea is to promote the importance of forests in everyday life under the banner ‘Celebrating Forests for People’. The key aim of the year is to raise awareness of sustainable forest management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests for current and future generations. (source: www.un.org) Using inspiring ‘art rich’ picture books and the artworks of significant past and present artists in which the focus is on trees and forests, this workshop will provide primary classroom teachers and art specialists with ways to explore and integrate the Year of the Forest into their programs using a range of Arts skills, techniques and media together with English strategies. The focus will be on Australia’s Native Growth Forests (Old Growth) and Rainforests. Links to VELS Sustainability Perspectives and VELS Arts and English standards will be made.
