The pupils began by looking at and discussing many of the works of Gaudi and also a collection of unusual architecture from around the world. We discussed the differences and similarities between organic and geometric shapes and form. Then I gave the pupils a large selection of seed pods, gum nuts, bones etc. and we practised drawing their shape and form. From these drawings, the pupils were challenged to design a tower by combining these shapes. The main purpose of this exercise was to get them to start designing outside the idea of ‘straight’ architecture.

The sculptures started as a 1 litre milk container and they were given egg cartons, corks and cut up card cylinders to create the underlying form. They then used papier mache, followed by decoration.

They were marked on form, use of wire, paint and mosaic.
