- After studying the cubist style of Picasso, the children looked at his "Weeping Woman" in more detail. Attention was directed to the use of geometric shapes and the different views of the face.
- Using Cover Paper, the children built up a background of different shapes.
- Strips of black and white were added to increase the linear effect.
- They then designed the facial features - eyes, nose, ear, eyebrows and mouth, as well as tears and a hand.
- The layering of paper was encouraged to create contrast.
- Posca markers in black and white were used to further highlight the facial features.

Faces
|
- Initially, children experimented with drawing cartoon-type faces.
- Emphasis was placed on exaggerating facial features.
- Sketches were enlarged, with some parts of the face being "off the page".
- The children were prompted to select colours not normally associated with the human face.
- Discussion centred on colour tones and complementary colours.
- The designs were then coloured with oil pastels.
