Term 4 2005 Gallery

Ruyton Girls School

How To:

  • The students began this project with a drawing lesson.
  • Leaves were collected and time was spent studying the detail of their internal features. The drawings were completed using 2B pencils.
  • Closely observing the details of another leaf, the students drew directly on to foam and prepared the plate for the relief printing technique.
  • Collage backgrounds and coloured paper were used to print the foam leaf images.
  • The collage effect was created overlapping torn edges of a variety of textured papers.
  • Only black and white printing ink was used to give strong contrast against the papers.

Prints

How To:
  • The students were introduced to floral studies by works of artists such as Dufy, Van Gogh, Matisse, Klimt and Redon.
  • They then brainstormed the different flower types and varieties.
  • The lesson proceeded with colour mixing.
  • Working from a monochrome palette they experimented with shades and tints by adding white or black to some of their colours.
  • These were prepared prior to the painting and other tones were created by painting directly on to the paper.

Fish in Water

  • To make their fish in water the students created a collage background of water using a number of different paper types and combining matt and shiny surfaces.
  • The selected papers were torn rather than cut to help create the feeling and movement of water.
  • The fish were made using plastic contact, glitter and cellophane.
