How to:
- Grade 5 students were studying Aboriginal culture when we began making these masks. We decided we wanted an unusual mask but with an aboriginal influence.
- The students started with a rectangle of Camelot card, which was scored down the centre for a smooth, sharp fold.
- Students then estimated where the eyeholes should be and drew them on - cutting them out with a Utility knife.
- The children were encouraged to cut an interesting edge around the outside of the card.
- The nose was a triangular piece of card, which was also scored down the centre and cut out with tabs on the outside edges - noses were attached with a glue gun.
- Students then added line designs using black markers.
- Using traditional 'earth' colours to fill all areas and the dot painting method as a decorative technique successfully incorporated the Aboriginal 'flavour' the students were looking for.
