Firemen

How To:

A highlight at Kew Primary School is the annual visit from The Metropolitan Fire Brigade. Prior to the visit the children participate in a sequence of three art lessons:

  • Fabric collage- discuss the qualities of different fabrics, body coverage etc.
  • Children cut out a simple Cover Paper body shape and then dress and decorate their fire fighter using a variety of fabrics.
  • Drawing: line- discuss buildings, their function, shape, size etc.
  • Children use black line markers/crayons to draw a cityscape including a high-rise building, a church, a bridge etc.
  • Painting: Children use sponges to mix red and yellow paint to create flames and a burning cityscape.
  • Printing: A tissue is then used to apply black and white paint to print smoke.
  • The fire fighters were glued on to the background, the straw ladders and hose and finally the glitter to extinguish the flames!
