Toas

How To:
  • Toas are the name given to small assembled sculptures originally made from wood, gypsum, ochres and natural materials.
  • The indigenous Dyiari people from Lake Eyre, South Australia, were the first people recorded using Toas.
  • Toas were used as signposts at camp sites; also like good luck charms. Lin Onus' work: "Toas for a modern age" was the inspiration for these grade 5&6 students.
  • The aim was to create an individual toa which told a message about their own life or beliefs.
  • The toa could be traditional, contemporary, serious or quirky.
