Dry Felting

1. We discussed the types of marine life that is found along our shores. Students were asked to use their recent experiences from the 2006 grade 5/6 Camp at Queenscliff. Questions that we discussed were; what unique qualities do marine life have? Discuss the types of patterns that are found on their skins? What elements of design are necessary for pattern work? (line, shape, colour, and repetition.)
2. Students were required to design their dry felt piece first. Students should also think about the colours they wish to use-using coloured pencils. Once complete, students then transferred their design on to a piece of coloured Felt Square using a grey lead.
3. I demonstrated how to use the dry felting needle. The needle needs to be held up right to decrease the risk of breakage. Place a felt square on top of a sponge foam square. Place the coloured wool in desired spot and use the needle to begin pushing the wool into the felt squares. You can overlap different colours to give interesting coloured effects. Students continued with this process until their design was complete.
Once finished the work was mounted for presentation.
