Masks

How To:
  • The Students of Grade six were given the task of creating a "black and white" mask, which was recently featured in the Zart mask making flyer.
  • Although both construction and collage techniques were important aspects of the Zart mask, my focus and major concern was to develop the students drawing skills and their awareness of art principles: pattern, contrast and repetition.
  • Thus the quick and not very permanent joining method of using sticky tape was used and I provided the students with pre-cut stencils of the mask outline.
  • The limited palette of black and white was extended to one extra colour and an extensive variety of permanent pens were also used.
  • One thing discovered was that newspaper print tends to leave dirty marks on the flexible, plastic masks. So use an alternative for covering your work surfaces
  • The end result was very pleasing and this particular task produced variety and individuality of artworks.
