China Dolls • Level 4

Lesson Plan:

SESSION 1

  • Introduce our term focus.
  • Brainstorm what children already know about China.
  • Children work in pairs/3’s to complete jigsaw puzzles (pre-cut and packaged pictures
  • of Chinese paintings depicting scenes/characters/life from Ancient China.).
  • List on whiteboard any new knowledge/understanding/insight into the Chinese culture as a result of closer observation of these artworks.
  • Type up brainstormed notes to display and refer to displayed copies of artworks for future reference.

SESSION 2

  • Introduced to costumes/clothing of Ancient China.
  • In groups students quickly read a selection of excerpts re. Chinese clothing, etc.
  • Share briefly.
  • Brief explanation of dynasties/class system and its influences on Chinese customs/way of life,clothing, hairstyles.
  • Students to research character from a period of Chinese history on classroom computers and print colour copy for reference.

SESSION 3

  • Give out ZART wooden ‘dolls’ select appropriate fabrics-consider textures, quality of fabric to reflect class/role of person wearing it.
  • Begin cutting out costume parts using pre-cut paper patterns-demonstrate pinning pattern to fabric and cutting neatly.

SESSION 4

  • Continue working on ‘dolls’ as needed.
  • Individual instruction with sewing, other alternatives to join items of clothing
  • Adding detail such as pattern on fabrics; looking at authentic hairstyles additional items such as props for more authenticity i.e. headgear, umbrella, book.

SESSIONS 5-7

  • Students continued working on their dolls and making them as authentic as possible constantly referring to reference books /Internet and our LOTE Mandarin teacher for advice.

Students were so proud of their efforts. A wonderful integration of the Classroom Inquiry and support for our school LOTE program.
