Creating and making

Students designed an artwork that represents and communicates an idea of “something personal that depicts a furry/and or fluffy object” for the purpose of exploring texture. (We brainstormed ideas on “something personal”-toys, objects that have been given as gifts, baby toys etc)

Essential questions were asked of the students to develop their thinking skills and to look at the ways in which artists have used drawing in the past and present to express and communicate ideas. They experimented by selecting objects for observational drawing that they brought from home and used appropriate drawing methods and media of pencils and pastels to create textural effects in their visual diary. 

They combined and manipulated art elements of line, shape, colour and texture, to develop imaginative solutions to set tasks. Students were shown the “Elements of Art” pack from Zart Art and discussed the difference between natural and created textures. Students defined each art element using a mind map and illustrating each element. They also used their text book “Art Detective, Chapter 3 Art elements & principles -page 66 & 67 “Feeling Texture” for further inspiration.

·        Students completed a pencil drawing first in their visual diary and then proceeded to explore the medium of oil pastels.(Page 18 -Art Detective Drawing)

·        Students were also directed by the teacher to explore other art elements and to apply these to their work.

·        They explored the techniques of creating texture using Portfolio Pastels by smudging, adding, blending various colours for textural effects.

·        Students were also encouraged to annotate their ideas and techniques in their visual diary.

·        The finished drawing was completed on coloured paper from Zart Art that also had some texture on it. (Prisma card 220 gsm)

·        They maintained a record of the creating and making of their artworks in their visual diary and explained their decisions about how to present their art work for specific purposes and audiences at Zart Gallery.

This is one of two drawings that students completed for their drawing unit about 6 weeks.
