Myths, Legends and Folktales

This unit of work focuses on the theme of Myths, Legends and Folktales. Class discussions were based around this theme and students formed definitions of a myth, legend and a folktale. A myth being a traditional story based on truth but which has had bits added. A legend is a traditional story of gods or heroes which tries to explain why people or things are like they are. A folktale is a short story which has been written to give a message.

Students were then asked to find their own image of a myth, legend or folktale. They completed several experiments and were introduced to various acrylic painting techniques which they used in their final finished artworks. These techniques included sponging, stippling, applying a wash, using a palette knife to create texture and movement, blending and dry brushing.

Overall students selected a variety of different myths, legend and folktales keeping in mind that in the 19th, 20th & 21st centuries many myths, legends and folktales have been depicted in an animated format.
