How To:
As part of our School Art programme our students, from Kindergarten through to year 6, complete a significant collage piece each year, exploring the potential of different media.
By senior primary they have good organizational and cut/paste skills and enjoy the challenge of bringing their ideas to reality. This was the first time they have used print media imagery.
They
- Started with a basic sketch of their selected subject, animal or insect, on which to overlay their magazine cut-out pieces, this was not too prescriptive, to allow for opportunities which might arise as the work progressed.
- Some students selected imagery related to their interests but most were reluctant to cut up their hobby magazines, so for the most part, imagery selection was based on the magazine/pamphlets available.
- Cut pieces were stored in plastic A4 pockets between lessons.
- After completing the subject it was cut out and overlayed on a minimalist background.
It proved to be a successful exercise in visual problem solving and the results demonstrated innovative solutions.
Students often helped one another find key pieces e.g. “this might suit yours”. They were all proud of their individual responses.
