Microcrystalline Wax Models

How To:

Week 1

  • The children had access to a wide range of reference books to spark their imagination
  • Sketches of possible characters were made
  • Plaster was poured to fill a quarter of a 600ml plastic bottle, which would form the body of the character and provide stability
  • A slot was made in the bottle lid with a iron and a pop stick inserted upon which the wax head was to be moulded

Week 2

  • Microcrystalline wax was used to model the head

Week 3

  • Armature wire approx. 30cm long was twisted around the neck of the bottle to form arms
  • This was bent at each end to form a base for the hands to be modeled from wax
  • Strips of wadding was then wound around the wire and fixed with craft glue
  • Plain fabric was wound over this

Week 4

  • the shape of the bottle could be altered by adding tails (same methods as for arms) attaching cardboard cones and pulling a stocking piece over the bottle and adding cushion filling
  • Jo Sonja and Chromatemp paint was used to paint the head, hands and in some models the arms and bottles

Week 5, 6 & 7

  • Costumes were fashioned using a variety of fabrics and trims
  • Arms were again wound with fabric
  • Same fabric was used to to fashion jackets and coats
  • Simple stitching and craft glue was used
  • Care was taken in the selection of fabrics and costume to match the character of the model
