How To:
- Students in grades 5/6 at The Grange P-12 College began with a session learning how to play chess
- They then had to design their own chess set; 6 classes, 6 chess sets, each made of a different material
- The challenge for each class was to come up with a theme and an appropriate and workable design for their pieces
- Two were made of clay, one with traditional characters in glazed terracotta, and the other, made to look like tombstones, in white earthenware underglaze
- Another two chess sets were based on the Simpson characters and were made with Sculpt It and paper mache
- A more traditional design was carved out of Balsa wood and a very contemporary black and white set was made out of heavy cardboard cylinders
- The project was a real test in cooperation and teamwork, from initial brainstorming of ideas to the choice of colour and decoration
