Zart Art’s Jewish Celebration Activity: Chanukah

Dreidel

One of the best known symbols of Chanukah is the Dreidel. A Dreidel is a four sided top with a Hebrew letter on each side. The four letters are Shin, Hey, Gimel, Nun. (Nun: nothing happens and next player spins. Gimel: player takes all tokens in the pot. Hey: player takes half of the pot. Shin: player must put one token in the pot). The player spins the driedel, when it stops, the letter facing up decides the fate.

Players use, nuts, raisins or chocolate coins (gelt) as tokens.

Materials

Zart Paper Magiclay

Foilboard

Dowel

Supertac

1. Place the dreidel template on to a sheet of Foilboard and trace around it.

2. Cut Foilboard shape out.

3. Glue tabs with Supertac or PVA and construct the box shape.

4. Cut a hole in the centre of the lid and in the pointed base.

5. Create the characters on each side of the dreidel with Zart Paper Magiclay, cardboard or Foilboard.

6. Press (wet) Zart Paper Magiclay directly on to each side of the driedel to adhere, then decorate

7. Cut a length of Dowel or a plastic rod to approximately 15cm and colour each end in a contrasting colour.

8. Shape one end of the Dowel to a point - so that the top spins easily.
