5. A mixture of collage materials can be used but they may need to be under laid with thin card board where there is a variation in height.

6. Use a sponge or foam roller to coat the collagraph block with a thin layer of paint (Chromacryl is excellent).

7. Print the block facedown onto paper - pressing down evenly over the boxboard base.

8. When the prints are dry you can:

- cut out and collaged onto a new surface

- left whole and framed or mounted

- coloured in

- drawn on with metallic pens or markers

- stitched

- beaded etc

WIRE DRAGONFLY BROOCH

Materials

  • Florist Wire Rainbow
  • Brooch Back 20 mm Gold or Silver
  • Beading Wire Gold or Silver
  • Large round bead (if desired)
  • Mini Flat Nosed Pliers
  • Mini Round Nosed Pliers
  • Mini Diagonal Cutter

BODY OF DRAGONFLY

1. Take one piece of wire (approx 45 cm) and bend it to make a loop (this will be the head) with the shortest side (left hand side) approximately 5 cm long (if using a bead for the head, thread the bead on now so it sits at the top of the loop).

2. Squeeze together so the bottom of the short side is touching the long side and the top of the loop (head) is approximately 1 cm wide.

3. Hold the head in your left hand upside down and wrap the longest length once, clockwise around the end.

4. Turn loop upright (now holding the tail) and twist anti clockwise all the way up to the top of the head (and once across the loop, or bead to secure and form a "rounded" shape).

5.  Hold the head in left hand and twist clockwise all the way back down.

6. Hold the tail in left hand and twist up anti clockwise as far as the wire will allow. Keep in mind to taper the shape so that the top (head) is the widest part (i.e. don't wrap too much wire around the tail end). Poke end of wire through the body so that it is not sticking out.

WINGS OF DRAGONFLY

1. Take another length of wire and make a loop so that the shortest end is approximately 4 cm. Twist the longest length clockwise around 1 cm from the end of the shortest length. Make another loop with the longest length so that it matches the first loop (this will be on the opposite side).

2. Turn the work around so that the second loop is in your left hand. Twist wire once around the mid point clockwise. Repeat so that you end up with 4 wings. Flatten the 1 cm excess from the start against the middle twists to neaten.

CONNECTING WINGS TO BODY

Thread the excess long end of the wings 1/3 of the way through the body so the wings sit nicely spaced under the head. Thread back through a different but close space and pull with mini flat nosed pliers to tighten. Wrap over wings to secure and thread through the front again and then to the back.  Holding the head in your left hand, twist the loose wire clockwise around the body, poke end back through the body to neaten.

ATTACHING BROOCH BACK

Take a length of Beading Wire and starting from the back (flat) of the Brooch Back with the clasp opened, thread through holes. Re-thread back through holes in opposite direction and pull with mini flat nosed pliers to tighten.

With the flat side of the brooch back toward the back of the dragonfly body, thread the beading wire from the top of the brooch back through to the front, making sure this is where you want the brooch back to sit, then thread the beading wire from the bottom part of the brooch back through to the front. Thread each end back through to the back, ensuring it is not through the same hole, and thread through the hole of the brooch back, pull with mini flat nosed pliers to tighten. Twist Beading Wire together for around 5 mm and cut with Mini Diagonal Cutter or old pair of scissors. Using Mini Round Nose Pliers, poke twisted wire through brooch back hole to the middle of the body to neaten.

Finish by bending and shaping wings to the desired shape.
