Wandjina Figures & Rock Art

Suitable for:

Levels/Age Group: Ages 5-12

Materials:

Paper Shapes Dolls
Poster Colour Paints by Zart Earth Tones
Cotton Filters
Cartridge Paper A4

How to make Wandjina Figures:

Discuss and research the Wandjina figures to find information and images to base their own work on.

  1. Use a wet brush to form a well of colour in each of the Poster Paints earth colours. Re do this as the need arises.
  2. Use a Paper Shape Doll as a stencil and while holding it down with one hand use a Cotton Filter dipped into the wet paint to outline the figure with dots of colour.
  3. Carefully lift the stencil off the paper when the shape is completely outlined.
  4. Use dot patterning to decorate the figure to resemble the ancestral beings painted in caves and shelters in the Kimberley region.

Activity Extension:

Try the same activity on different coloured backgrounds, how could you make the paper look like the inside of a cave?
Trace around a student on a large sheet of brown paper or card and make life size figures in this style.
